World Tourism Day: Discovering People, Cultures and Places Through Responsible Travel

September 27, 2026: A journey can be more than a visit to a new place. It can open a window into another culture, introduce travellers to different traditions and communities, and create opportunities to see the world from a new perspective. World Tourism Day, observed annually on 27 September, highlights the social, cultural and economic importance of tourism while encouraging people to travel responsibly.

Tourism brings millions of people into contact with communities, cultures and places they may otherwise never encounter. From historic cities and religious sites to natural landscapes and local communities, travel can encourage curiosity, cultural exchange and a deeper appreciation of the diversity of human experience.

For many travellers, journeys also take the form of pilgrimages. Unlike ordinary tourism, a pilgrimage is traditionally undertaken with a spiritual purpose. Pilgrims travel to places associated with faith, prayer and sacred history, seeking time for reflection, worship and renewal. Christian pilgrimage has a long tradition, with destinations such as Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela and other shrines and holy places drawing people from different countries and cultures.

Pilgrimage can also become an experience of encounter. Walking alongside fellow pilgrims, visiting local communities and learning about the history and traditions surrounding a sacred place can deepen one's understanding of faith while creating opportunities for cultural exchange. The journey itself can become part of the spiritual experience, inviting pilgrims to step away from everyday routines and make space for prayer and reflection.

Beyond leisure and spirituality, tourism also has an important economic dimension. It supports employment and livelihoods in areas ranging from hospitality and transport to local businesses, crafts and cultural activities. For many communities, tourism and pilgrimage can contribute to local economic development while providing opportunities for people to share their traditions, heritage and faith with visitors.

However, the growth of tourism and pilgrimage also brings responsibilities. Travellers can affect the environment, local cultures and the daily lives of communities they visit. Responsible travel therefore calls for greater awareness of local customs, respect for sacred and cultural heritage, care for the environment and consideration for the people whose homes and communities form part of the journey.

For Christians, travel can also become an opportunity for encounter. Meeting people from different backgrounds can foster respect, dialogue and a greater appreciation of the dignity shared by every human person. Catholic teaching places the human person and the common good at the centre of social life, making respect for communities and cultures an important consideration in how people engage with the world around them.

Tourism can bring people closer to places of historical and spiritual significance. Churches, cathedrals, pilgrimage sites and other religious landmarks often carry centuries of history, art, faith and cultural memory. Visiting such places can be an opportunity not only to admire their beauty but also to understand the traditions and communities that have preserved them.

World Tourism Day thus offers an opportunity to look beyond tourism as simply travelling from one destination to another. Whether travelling for leisure, cultural discovery or pilgrimage, people can consider how they travel, how they engage with local communities and what they leave behind.

A responsible traveller does more than collect photographs and souvenirs. A pilgrim, likewise, does more than simply arrive at a sacred destination. By approaching people, cultures, heritage, sacred places and the environment with respect, travel can become an experience of meaningful encounter, spiritual reflection and shared human understanding.
