Workshop in Kerala Calls for Greater Local Body Participation in Fisheries Development

Ernakulam, Kerala, May 9, 2026 — A workshop organised by the Coastal Area Development Agency for Liberation (CADAL) and the Ernakulam Social Service Society (ESSS) called on local self-government institutions to make better use of opportunities for the development of coastal and inland fisheries sectors in Kerala.


The programme aimed to create awareness about the challenges and development possibilities in the fisheries sector and to strengthen the role of local bodies in supporting coastal communities.


The workshop was held at the Social Service Society Auditorium in Ernakulam and was inaugurated by Bishop Dr. Antony Valunkal, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. Adv. V.K. Minimol attended as the chief guest.


Speakers highlighted the need for scientific planning, sustainable development and stronger participation by local bodies in addressing the concerns of fishing communities.


KRLCC General Secretary Fr. Dr. Jiju Arakkathara, CADAL General Secretary Joseph Jude and KLCA President Adv. Sherry J. Thomas also addressed the gathering.


CADAL Vice Chairman Placid Gregory and Director Fr. Dr. Celestine Puthenpurackal presented papers on coastal development and welfare initiatives.


The organisers said the workshop helped local self-government representatives gain a clearer understanding of their role in promoting sustainable development in coastal and inland fisheries sectors.
