Spain, October 31, 2026 : Not every saint becomes famous through preaching to crowds or leading great missions. Some reveal God’s love through the quiet, everyday work of welcoming others. Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, a humble Jesuit brother from Spain, spent much of his life opening a door—and, more importantly, opening his heart to everyone who came to him.
Alphonsus Rodriguez was born into a family involved in the wool and cloth trade. As a young man, he studied with the Jesuits but had to leave school following his father’s death to help manage the family business.

Around the age of twenty-six, he married María Suárez, and they had three children. However, tragedy struck his family: his wife and children died, and his business eventually failed. These painful losses deeply affected Alphonsus, but they also led him to seek God more earnestly through prayer and spiritual guidance.
Feeling called to religious life, Alphonsus applied to join the Society of Jesus. His age, limited education, and fragile health made acceptance difficult. Yet he persevered, and in 1571, he was admitted as a Jesuit brother. His journey reminds us that God’s plans may unfold differently from our expectations.
Alphonsus was sent to the Jesuit college in Palma, Majorca, where he eventually served as porter and doorkeeper for many years. His duties seemed ordinary: greeting visitors, delivering messages, running errands, and helping those in need.
But Alphonsus transformed these simple tasks into acts of love. He tried to welcome every visitor as though Christ Himself stood at the door. Whenever someone needed comfort, advice, or prayer, he offered a listening ear and a compassionate heart.
One of the young Jesuits who benefited from his friendship was Saint Peter Claver. Alphonsus encouraged Peter to follow his missionary calling, which eventually led him to serve enslaved Africans in Cartagena, in present-day Colombia.
Alphonsus died on October 31, 1617, after a life marked by suffering, perseverance, and deep devotion. His reputation for holiness continued to inspire people after his death. He was beatified in 1825 and canonised by Pope Leo XIII in 1888.
Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez teaches us that holiness is not reserved for people with impressive titles or extraordinary responsibilities. We can serve God through patience, kindness, prayer, and faithful attention to everyday duties.
His life also reminds us that suffering need not close our hearts. Even after experiencing profound loss, Alphonsus became a source of comfort for others. His example challenges Catholics to welcome strangers, listen without judgement, and recognise Christ in every person.
In a world where many feel lonely or overlooked, his message remains powerful: a simple act of kindness can become a meaningful expression of God’s love.
Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, pray for us!
