Why is June Dedicated to the Sacred Heart Of Jesus ?

June 10, 2026: Every month in the Catholic Church has a special spiritual focus. May is traditionally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, while November is devoted to praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. When June arrives, Catholics around the world turn their attention to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one of the most beloved devotions in the Church.

Origins of the Devotion

The dedication of June to the Sacred Heart is closely linked to a series of events that took place more than three centuries ago in Paray-le-Monial, France. Between 1673 and 1675, Jesus appeared several times to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun, and revealed His deep love for humanity.

During these private revelations, Jesus expressed His desire that people come to know and experience His love more fully. One of the most significant moments occurred in June 1675 during what is often called the "Great Apparition." It was during this revelation that Jesus asked for a special feast in honour of His Sacred Heart.

He said to St. Margaret Mary:

"Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to testify Its love."

How June Became Associated with the Sacred Heart

Jesus requested that the feast be celebrated on the Friday following the octave of Corpus Christi. Over time, this request gained wider acceptance within the Church, and devotion to the Sacred Heart continued to spread.

A key figure in promoting the devotion was St. Claude de la Colombière, the spiritual director of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. Through his support and encouragement, the message of the Sacred Heart reached many more people.

As the devotion grew, the Church gradually embraced it more fully. In 1856, Pope Pius IX extended the Feast of the Sacred Heart to the universal Church, allowing Catholics throughout the world to celebrate it.

Because the Feast of the Sacred Heart always falls in June, the Church gradually came to dedicate the entire month to honouring the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Throughout June, Catholics are encouraged to reflect on Christ's love and to deepen their relationship with Him through prayer and devotion.

Living the Devotion Today

Many believers mark the month through practices such as the First Friday Devotion, receiving Holy Communion, spending time in Eucharistic adoration, and participating in prayers dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

More than 350 years after the revelations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the devotion continues to inspire Catholics across the world. In a time marked by uncertainty, division and constant activity, the month of June offers a reminder of Christ's enduring love and His invitation to draw closer to Him.

The Church's dedication of June to the Sacred Heart is ultimately an invitation to pause, reflect and encounter the love of Jesus—a love that continues to guide, strengthen and renew believers today.
