Kerala , June 30, 2026: Throughout Christian history, accounts of Eucharistic miracles have captured the attention of believers and researchers alike. From ancient traditions to modern scientific examinations, these extraordinary events have often raised profound questions about faith, mystery and the presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
In the 21st century, India has become home to two remarkable Eucharistic events that have drawn worldwide attention: the miracle of Chirattakonam in 2001 and the Holy Face of Jesus at Vilakkannur in 2013, which received official Vatican recognition in 2025. Both events involve a consecrated Host displaying a visible image associated with Jesus Christ, leading to years of investigation and prayerful reflection.
On 15th November 2013, at Christ the King Church in Vilakkannur, Kerala, India, an extraordinary event occurred during the celebration of Holy Mass. As the Eucharistic celebration continued, a visible image resembling the face of Jesus appeared on the consecrated Host.
The phenomenon immediately attracted the attention of the parish community. The Host was carefully preserved, and the matter was submitted for examination through Church authorities. Unlike many unexplained occurrences that disappear into uncertainty, the Vilakkannur event underwent a long process of theological and scientific study.

The investigation examined whether the image could have been caused by natural factors, human intervention or external substances. Scientific studies reported that the material forming the image was consistent with the Host itself, with no external substance identified as responsible for the appearance.
After years of review, the Vatican gave approval for the recognition of the Eucharistic event.
On 31 May 2025, the official declaration was announced at Christ the King Church, Vilakkannur, during a solemn celebration led by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India. The event marked a historic moment for the Catholic Church in India, as the Vilakkannur Eucharistic miracle became officially recognised.
For many faithful, the image of the Holy Face of Jesus became a reminder of the central belief of Eucharistic devotion: that Christ is truly present in the Blessed Sacrament.
Before Vilakkannur gained international recognition, another extraordinary Eucharistic event had already taken place in Kerala at St Mary’s Church, Chirattakonam.
The event occurred on 28th April 2001 during Eucharistic Adoration and a novena prayer to St Jude. As the Blessed Sacrament was exposed, parish priest Father Johnson Karoor noticed three red marks appearing on the consecrated Host.
The unusual marks immediately drew attention. Some faithful connected the three signs with the wounds of Christ and the Gospel account of St Thomas the Apostle, who asked to see the wounds of the risen Jesus before believing.
Several days later, after returning from a short absence on 5th May 2001, Father Karoor discovered that the appearance on the Host had changed. The marks had developed into a clearer image resembling the face of Jesus Christ, traditionally depicted with a crown of thorns.
The event was examined by Church authorities, including the verification of Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios. The miraculous Host was preserved and placed in a golden monstrance, where it continues to be honoured by pilgrims and visitors seeking prayer and reflection.
One striking feature of modern Eucharistic miracles is the careful examination that often follows the reported events. The Church does not simply accept every claim but investigates such occurrences through theological and scientific processes.
The cases of Vilakkannur and Chirattakonam reflect this approach. Both events involved visible changes to consecrated Hosts, followed by documentation, examination and discernment. For believers, these moments are not viewed as replacing faith but as signs that invite deeper reflection on the mystery of the Eucharist.
Similar to other internationally known Eucharistic miracles, such as those in Lanciano and Buenos Aires, these Indian events have become part of a wider conversation about faith and evidence. They continue to inspire devotion among Catholics while also attracting curiosity from people interested in the relationship between science and spirituality.
The miracles of Chirattakonam and Vilakkannur stand as remarkable chapters in the story of Eucharistic devotion. Emerging from ordinary parish communities in Kerala, they have reached beyond local boundaries and gained international attention.
For the faithful, these events carry a spiritual message: a call to renew belief, prayer and reverence for the Eucharist.
Whether viewed through the eyes of faith, historical interest or scientific curiosity, the stories of Vilakkannur and Chirattakonam remain among the most fascinating religious events of the 21st century.
In the quiet churches of Kerala, two mysterious images continue to tell the same message that has echoed through centuries of Christian tradition — a reminder of the enduring mystery of Christ’s presence among His people.
