Superior General and Three Nuns of MCST congregation Killed in Tanzania Car Crash

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – September 18, 2025 – The Superior General and three sisters of the Congregation of Carmelite Missionary Sisters of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus were killed in a fatal automobile accident in Tanzania on Sunday, September 15, along with their driver. A fifth sister remains hospitalised in critical condition. The victims were returning from the celebration of the Provincial Chapter and the Perpetual Vows of three sisters when the accident occurred.


The deceased include Sr. Lilian Gladson Kapongo, Superior General of the Congregation; Sr. Maria Nerina De Simone, General Councillor and Secretary; Sr. Damaris Matheka, Provincial Councillor for the East Africa Province; Sr. Stellamaris Muthini; and their driver, Mr. Bonifasi. Sr. Paulina Crisante Mipata is in serious condition and receiving treatment in a local hospital.


The tragedy occurred on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, when the sisters were travelling back from the celebratory events. Church officials described the loss as “very great and painful” for the Congregation, calling on the faithful to pray for the eternal rest of the deceased and for the spiritual and pastoral needs of the community.


The Congregation, known for its missionary work and dedication to the teachings of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, is mourning a significant loss in leadership and service.
