Seven Women Secure JDAX Civil Services Scholarships; Applications Still Open!

Chennai, May 18, 2026: For many young Indians, the UPSC dream does not end because of a lack of talent or hard work. It ends much earlier — at the coaching fee counter.

In today’s competitive coaching ecosystem, preparing for India’s toughest examination often depends on where you come from, how much your family earns, and whether you can afford years of preparation in a major city.

At the JD Academy of Excellence (JDAX), the UPSC coaching initiative of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore, that reality is being challenged through a scholarship-based model focused on merit, accessibility, formation, and professional rigour.

This admission season, seven young women from across India secured JDAX Civil Services Scholarships — and the opportunity is still open for aspiring candidates until May 31, 2026. The registration link is given at the end of this article.

Jai Malini from Tiruvannamalai received a 100% scholarship. Joselin Delcia from Kumbakonam Diocese secured 75%. Nikhitha from Gulbarga and Jaya Rickcey from Cuddalore each received 50%. Kavithasri from Tiruvannamalai was awarded 40%. Elwin Archala from Red Hills received 25%, and Jasmeet Kaur travelled from Punjab after securing 20%.

Seven women. Four states. One shared reality: without a system designed for merit and accessibility, many of them may never have had the opportunity to begin UPSC preparation.

Merit: The Foundation

Take Nikhitha’s story. She comes from rural Karnataka and is completing her M.Com at St. Aloysius University with a 7.8 CGPA. Her father is currently unemployed. Her mother works as a farmer. The family’s annual income is ₹10,000.

At many coaching centres, financial limitations might have closed the door immediately. At JDAX, her application entered a four-step assessment process designed to identify merit and potential.

The process includes a detailed application, scholarship interview, objective profile analysis, and final allocation based on merit and financial need.

“There are no discretionary decisions here,” says Rev. Dr. A. L. Anthony Sebastian, Director of JDAX and Coordinator of the Education Apostolate for the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. “The Church’s resources must reach the deserving. We’ve built a system to ensure exactly that.”

The result is a three-tier scholarship model: Entry-level scholarships for top aspirants, Post-Prelims scholarships for those who clear the examination, and a Sponsor-Cycle where successful candidates support future aspirants.

Why would a Church institution run a UPSC coaching academy?

Because civil services is not just about clearing an exam. It is about the kind of person one becomes while preparing for power and responsibility.

An IAS officer decides who gets the ration card. An IPS officer decides whose complaint gets heard. An IFS officer represents India abroad. These decisions affect real people and real lives every day.

“UPSC doesn’t just test knowledge,” Fr. Sebastian explains. “It tests character. The interview panel can sense whether a candidate has reflected on why they want to serve, and what will guide them when they hold power.”

At JDAX, preparation and formation go together. Aspirants study governance while also reflecting on justice, dignity, integrity, and the common good.

Accessibility: The Commitment

JDAX’s promise is simple: to make civil services preparation accessible without compromising on quality or discipline.

Commercial coaching has increasingly made UPSC preparation a privilege available mainly to the urban middle class. JDAX aims to break this pattern through a professionally run institution that treats accessibility as a core principle.

The scholarship recipients this year come from families where ₹10,000 is an annual income, not a monthly expense. They come from dioceses and regions that many coaching centres would overlook.

Yet today, they are preparing for one of the most competitive examinations in the country.

Professional Acumen: The Standard

Accessibility without quality means very little. JDAX emphasises both.

Its Foundation 365 programme is an 11-month intensive preparation course built on pedagogy, structured mentorship, and measurable progress. Faculty are selected for subject expertise and examination experience.

Hostel facilities, disciplined schedules, mentorship, and access to Mass create an environment where academic preparation and spiritual grounding go together.

Scholarship Window

The scholarship window closes on May 31. After this date, admissions will continue, but scholarship assessments will end.

For graduates and postgraduates still considering civil services, the opportunity remains open.
