Mysuru, April 10, 2026: A renewed emphasis on faith formation and liturgical discipline marked the Catechists and Sacristans Get-Together held at the Catholic Centre in Mysuru on April 11, drawing 87 participants from nine deaneries of the Diocese of Mysore.
Organised as a platform for ongoing formation, the gathering sought to deepen spiritual commitment and enhance the understanding of those engaged in catechetical and liturgical ministries. Participants reflected a shared resolve to strengthen the quality of pastoral service and uphold the dignity of the Church’s liturgical life.
Dr. Joseph Marie, Liturgy In-charge of the diocese, led a comprehensive session on liturgical norms and practices. Emphasising the importance of correct terminology, reverent handling of sacred objects, and fidelity to liturgical discipline, he addressed common areas of confusion while offering practical clarity. His presentation helped participants better understand the meaning and significance behind various liturgical actions and symbols.
A key highlight of the programme was the address by Bishop Francis Serrao of Mysuru, who engaged extensively with the gathering. Drawing on the spirit of the Year of Faith, he called for renewed efforts in “initiating and instilling faith” among the faithful. He encouraged catechists and sacristans to deepen their personal faith and commitment as a foundation for building vibrant Christian communities.
Reflecting on the theological dimensions of ministry, the Bishop spoke on Christ as Priest, Prophet, and King, underscoring the participation of every baptised person in Christ’s priesthood. He further explained the distinction between the ministerial and common priesthood, highlighting their complementary roles in the life of the Church.
He also offered detailed guidance on liturgical practices, including the proper use of vestments, meaningful altar arrangements such as candles and the Paschal Candle, and the reverent distribution and reception of Holy Communion. Extending his reflections to the sacraments—particularly Holy Communion, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Baptism, including emergency situations—he provided participants with a deeper theological and pastoral perspective.
An interactive session followed, during which Bishop Serrao responded to questions and clarified doubts, making the engagement both practical and insightful.
The programme concluded with an evaluation led by Fr. Arul Selva Kumar, Coordinator of the diocesan Commissions. Participants expressed appreciation for the clarity and relevance of the sessions, noting the importance of regular formation initiatives.
The gathering emerged as a meaningful step towards strengthening liturgical integrity and fostering informed, faith-driven ministry among catechists and sacristans in the diocese.
