Vatican City, 8 May 2025 — In his first public remarks following his election, Pope Leo XIV delivered a heartfelt message of peace and unity to the Church and the world, calling for the light of Christ to serve “as the bridge” to God’s love. Speaking in Italian from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica, he addressed the faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square and those watching globally. He recalled the words of St Augustine: “For you I am a bishop; but with you I am a Christian.”
Pope Leo XIV also directed a few words to the Church of Rome, now his new pastoral home, and expressed gratitude to his former diocese in Chiclayo, Peru, where he served before his election. He led the crowd in prayer, beginning with the Ave Maria, invoking Mary’s intercession for the Church and the world.
In a powerful message, the new pope expressed his desire that his words of peace would “enter your hearts, to reach your families and all people, wherever they are.” Offering a moving tribute to Pope Francis, he urged the faithful to “move forward, without fear, united, hand in hand with God and with each other.”
He also thanked the College of Cardinals for entrusting him with the papal office. Pope Leo XIV concluded his first address by giving the papal blessing to those gathered, marking the beginning of a pontificate shaped by humility, communion, and hope.
