Montevideo, November 8, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has urged Christians to reject a life of mediocrity and commit themselves fully to Christ, reminding the faithful that true joy and fulfilment come through holiness, prayer and selfless service.
Speaking during a prayer vigil in Montevideo on Saturday evening, the second day of his Apostolic Journey to Uruguay, the Pope called on the faithful not to settle for a merely decent life or a habitual practice of faith, but to give themselves completely to God.
“Christ did not call us to mediocrity; He called us to a new and full life like His own,” Pope Leo said, encouraging Christians not to be afraid of aspiring to holiness.
He described saints as men and women whose lives reflect the abundance of life in Christ, making love, truth and happiness attractive through their example.
Reflecting on growing secularisation and religious indifference, the Pope acknowledged the challenges facing Christian communities. He appreciated parents who pray with their children, teachers who witness to their faith, young people who remain committed to Christ, communities that continue to gather and priests who travel long distances to bring the sacraments to the faithful.
Pope Leo also urged Christians to examine whether they make sufficient room for Christ in their daily lives, homes and decisions. He encouraged them to keep Christ at the centre through prayer, the celebration of Mass, Confession and meditative reading of the Gospel.
“Is there room in our time, in our way of thinking, in our homes?” he asked, stressing that believers must continually renew their commitment as disciples if they wish to lead others to Christ.
Addressing young people, the Pope encouraged them to embrace marriage and family life without fear. He urged married couples to remain open to the gift of children and called on those discerning priesthood or consecrated life to respond courageously to God's invitation.
He further challenged the faithful to practise honesty, forgiveness and generosity, even when these choices demand personal sacrifice. Christians, he said, must be willing to give their time, money and comfort to serve others.
“Good News needs witnesses,” Pope Leo declared, reminding those gathered that Jesus Christ is the message the world needs to hear. He emphasised that God's love is stronger than death, hatred, violence, war and sin.
Concluding his reflection, the Pope invited the faithful to encounter Christ through Eucharistic adoration and cultivate a personal relationship with Him.
“Speak to Him, as you would to a friend,” he encouraged, inviting everyone to seek the Lord with the same openness and trust shown by Mary.
He concluded by urging the faithful to respond to God's call with Mary's words: “Here I am, Lord; here is your servant. Let your will be done in me!”
