Vatican City, 17 May, 2025– The official inauguration of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate will take place with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, 18 May, at 10 a.m. Rome time. The liturgy will mark the formal beginning of his ministry as the Bishop of Rome and successor to Saint Peter.
Thousands are expected to gather in the heart of the Vatican for the historic ceremony, which will be rich in tradition and symbolism. Among the highlights of the event will be the presentation of two sacred insignia: the Pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring.
The Pallium, a woollen band worn over the shoulders, symbolises the Pope’s pastoral authority and his unity with the bishops of the world. The Fisherman’s Ring, engraved with the image of Saint Peter casting his net, signifies the Pope’s mission as a “fisher of men”. The ring echoes the Gospel account in which Peter, acting on Jesus’ instruction, hauls in a miraculous catch of fish — a moment that reflects faith, obedience, and divine calling.
This ancient ritual signals not only the continuity of the Catholic Church’s spiritual leadership but also a renewal of its mission under new guidance. Pope Leo XIV, elected by the College of Cardinals following the death of his predecessor, steps into a role that carries immense global and spiritual significance.
The Vatican has confirmed that the ceremony will be broadcast live, allowing Catholics around the world to witness the momentous occasion.
