Vatican City, June 11, 2025: Pope Leo XIV spoke by phone on Wednesday afternoon with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón in a conversation that addressed bilateral relations, pressing global issues, and a potential papal visit to Spain. The Pope and the Spanish Prime Minister initiated the call to express mutual appreciation and to strengthen ongoing dialogue between the Holy See and Spain.
According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, during the call, the Pope conveyed his gratitude to Prime Minister Pedro for the presence of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Mass inaugurating his pontificate.
The statement added that during the exchange, Pope Leo XIV and the Spanish premier also discussed issues important to both countries, notably the migration crisis, the importance of fostering peace through dialogue, and the need to uphold and defend human dignity.
Prime Minister Sánchez Pérez-Castejón also took the opportunity to renew his formal invitation for the Holy Father to visit Spain. Their conversation included a reference to the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, scheduled to be held in June in Seville, Spain, which could serve as a possible occasion for a papal visit.
