Pope Leo XIV Appoints Dr. Luigi Carbone as Director of Vatican Health Directorate

Vatican City, 3 June 2025: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Dr. Luigi Carbone as the new Director of the Directorate of Health and Hygiene of the Vatican City State, effective August 1. The appointment was announced on Tuesday by the Holy See. Dr. Carbone, who currently serves as Deputy Director, will replace Professor Andrea Arcangeli, who is retiring this month after leading the Directorate since August 1, 2020.

Dr. Carbone brings extensive experience to the role, having served within the Directorate for several years and closely supported Vatican healthcare operations. He also served as the personal physician to Pope Francis and was at the late pontiff’s side throughout his illness.

The Directorate of Health and Hygiene, under the Governorate of Vatican City State, is responsible for maintaining public health and hygiene within the Vatican’s jurisdiction. As Director, Dr. Carbone will oversee medical services, implement public health policies, and coordinate emergency response procedures in the Vatican territory.

Dr. Carbone's appointment signals continuity in the Vatican’s healthcare leadership, as he has worked closely with outgoing Director Arcangeli during a period marked by global health challenges and internal reforms.

Professor Arcangeli steps down upon reaching the retirement age of 70, concluding nearly five years of service marked by dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and readiness within the Vatican.
