Vatican City, Aug. 29, 2025: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Maltese Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod and Bishop Emeritus of Gozo (a diocese in Malta), as a member of the Dicastery for the Clergy, the Diocese of Gozo announced on Thursday. The appointment aims to strengthen the governance and pastoral oversight of clergy across the universal Catholic Church.
In its statement, the Diocese of Gaza noted that in recent years, Pope Francis had appointed Cardinal Grech to several significant bodies of the Roman Curia, including the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, and the Dicasteries for Bishops as well as for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
Expressing its support and joy at Cardinal Grech’s appointment, the Diocese of Gozo reaffirmed its prayers for him, recognising his continued service to the Church at the highest levels of leadership.
