Pontifical Urbaniana University to Undergo Key Reforms for Missionary Education

Vatican City, August 30, 2024: The Dicastery for Evangelization recently convened an Extraordinary Plenary Assembly from August 29 to 30 to determine the future direction of the Pontifical Urbaniana University. A key focus was the realignment of the University's academic programs to better support missionary dioceses globally.

The discussion was informed by a synodal process involving 26 Episcopal Conferences from Asia and Africa, who provided insights and proposals on how the University can more effectively serve local ecclesial communities. These contributions are crucial in guiding the operational choices and criteria the University will adopt moving forward.

The assembly emphasized the importance of integrating these global perspectives into the University's mission, aligning with Pope Francis's call for a renewed missionary spirit. Planned reforms include enhancing academic resources, expanding study centers, and optimizing costs.

These changes aim to equip clergy and missionaries with the skills and knowledge needed to address the challenges of evangelization in diverse cultural contexts, ensuring the University remains a vital institution for the global Church.
