Over 10 Million Pilgrims Visit Rome Since Jubilee Year Began

Vatican, June 16, 2025: According to the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelisation, more than 10 million pilgrims have already visited Rome since the opening of the Jubilee Year by the late Pope Francis on 24 December 2024. With the Holy Year set to conclude on 6 January 2026, Church officials anticipate that over 30 million people will have walked through the Holy Doors of the city’s basilicas. Pope Leo XIV, his successor, is faithfully carrying forward the Jubilee’s mission under the same theme of hope and renewal.

These figures are not only remarkable in scale but also rich in spiritual meaning. Celebrated every 25 years, the Jubilee is a sacred tradition in the Catholic Church — a time of pilgrimage, repentance, reconciliation, and renewal. Rooted in the biblical principle found in Leviticus 25, it invites the faithful into a season of spiritual rest and reorientation.

Pope Francis entrusted this Jubilee with the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”, offering a message that resonates deeply in a world burdened by war, division, and widespread social weariness. The multitudes coming to Rome are not casual tourists, but pilgrims in search of mercy, healing, and renewed faith.
