New Delhi, May 31, 2025 — Jesus, the Distressed Migrant is a compelling new book that offers a multi-dimensional perspective on the lives and struggles of migrants, with a particular focus on India. Authored by noted social thinkers Prakash Louis and Peter Ignatius, the publication explores the socio-economic, theological, and political dimensions of migration. The book is being published by Christian World Imprints, New Delhi, and will be available for sale from June 2025.
This timely book delves into the global and Indian contexts of migration, offering a profound examination of the factors driving migration and the lived experiences of migrants, especially those who are distressed and vulnerable. Drawing from Catholic social teachings and anchored in the praxis of Pope Francis — particularly his 2017 address “Responding to Refugees and Migrants: Twenty Action Points” — the authors aim to move the discourse from doctrine to action.
Unlike many statistical reports and policy papers, the book refuses to view migrants as mere data points. Instead, it restores their dignity by presenting them as human beings with histories, struggles, and dreams. Louis and Ignatius bring to this work their decades-long experience with marginalised communities, particularly migrants, offering a first-hand account of the pain, displacement, and systemic neglect faced by these populations. Emphasising that Jesus himself lived the life of a migrant and refugee, the authors offer a theological reflection that deepens the moral urgency of migrant advocacy.
The book is a useful resource for all those concerned about issues faced by migrants; those who are trying to respond to this issue; and policymakers who are trying to address the vulnerability of labourers and migrants in India and elsewhere. The Church in India can make use of this book to delve deep into the various aspects of the distressed migrants, whose number and vulnerability are on the increase.
“Jesus, the Distressed Migrant” will be available for sale from June at Christian World Imprints (New Delhi), Xavier Institute of Social Research (Patna), Bagaicha (Ranchi), and the Indian Social Institute (Bengaluru and New Delhi). The publication is priced at Rs. 475, with a pre-publication offer of Rs. 300 (inclusive of postage) and a post-publication price of Rs. 350. Bulk purchases are eligible for additional discounts.
