Mythiri Nidhi Marks Six Years of Financial Service to Poor Families

Kochi, September 5, 2026: ESSS Mythiri Nidhi Limited, a microfinance initiative of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, has completed six years of service, providing financial support to poor women, domestic workers, fishermen and other low-income families in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts.

Mythiri originated as a credit union movement under ESSS, the social work wing of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, in the 1990s. The initiative was registered as ESSS Mythiri Nidhi Limited in 2020 under the Nidhi Act, with members of the credit unions becoming shareholders.

The Nidhi currently has 12,000 members and deposits totalling Rs 12 crore. It recorded a profit of Rs 43,590 during the current year, according to Managing Director Dr. Sijan Manuveliparambil.

The organisation offers short-term, recurring and fixed deposit schemes, besides loans against mortgaged assets for development purposes.

Fr. Martin Azhikkakath, founding director of Mythiri Nidhi, said the transition to a Nidhi company had enabled the organisation to expand its financial services to more poor families.

Two women in each parish facilitate the programme and help identify and reach families in need, irrespective of caste or religion.

Company Secretary Arun Kumar presented the annual report and budget at the Annual General Body Meeting, which was attended by 34 shareholders.
