Bengaluru, February 9, 2026: A year-long international programme in Canon Law for the laity concluded with a convocation ceremony in Bengaluru on February 8, marking the graduation of participants from across the globe. The diploma was conferred by Archbishop S. Antonysamy of Madurai, also the chairman of the CCBI Canon Law Commission in the presence of Fr. Stephen Alathara and Fr. Merlin Rengith Ambrose.
The Diploma in Canon Law for the Laity for a Synodal Church, inaugurated on June 7, 2025, drew 264 participants from countries including Malaysia, the United States, Australia, Italy, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Sudan, South Africa, Kuwait, England, Ireland, Canada, the UAE and India. The year-long course was designed and organised by Fr. Merlin Rengith Ambrose under the guidance of Archbishop S. Antonysamy.
At the inaugural session, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão highlighted the vital role of the laity in the Church, particularly in sharing in Christ’s threefold mission of priest, prophet and king. The programme offered formation to lay people, religious and clergy, focusing on the rights and responsibilities of the faithful in building a synodal Church.
Throughout the year, participants engaged in intensive academic work, submitting a total of 50 pages of assignments. The course drew strong international participation, reflecting growing interest in the study and practical application of Canon Law at the parish and diocesan levels.
The faculty included bishops, professors of Canon Law and experienced canonists from India and abroad, ensuring both academic rigour and pastoral relevance.
Graduates expressed their commitment to apply their knowledge in their respective ministries and communities. Many described the programme as an eye-opening experience that would strengthen their service within the Church.
Church leaders in India noted that the new graduates are expected to contribute to building a more participatory and synodal Church, equipped with a deeper understanding of Canon Law and its pastoral application.
