Kurnool Diocesan Synod Highlights Social and Educational Apostolates

Kurnool, 30 May 2025 - The Kurnool Diocesan Synod entered its last day with a strong emphasis on the Church’s social and educational missions. Held at Jeeva Sudha Pastoral Centre, the day featured spirited discussions, thoughtful reflections, and forward-looking proposals. Delegates and youth leaders united in shaping a more inclusive and service-driven diocesan vision.

The fourth day of the Kurnool Diocesan Synod, brought renewed energy and focus to two vital pillars of the Church’s mission—social outreach and education. The day began with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, led by the religious priests ministering in the diocese. This spiritual opening provided a meaningful foundation for a day marked by reflection, dialogue, and commitment to service.

The first session commenced with a prayer, scripture reading, devotional song, and a time of meditation, all led by youth representatives from across the deaneries. Their active participation infused the gathering with enthusiasm and hope.

Fr. Bhaskar, from the preparatory committee on Social Apostolate, delivered a detailed summary of the committee’s findings. He shed light on the commendable work of the Kurnool Diocesan Social Service Society (KDSSS), its ongoing projects, and its vision for the future. Delegates then engaged in group discussions, examining ways to strengthen the diocese’s social outreach.

Group secretaries presented thoughtful recommendations, including the provision of accommodation for hospital patients and their caregivers, job fairs, skill development initiatives, awareness campaigns, and improved access to government welfare schemes for marginalised communities. The session paused for lunch and rest.

The afternoon session resumed with a prayer and song, turning the focus to the educational apostolate. Fr. Thomas, a member of the preparatory committee, shared a comprehensive report highlighting current challenges and opportunities in the diocesan education sector.

Following productive group discussions and a tea break, secretaries shared their summaries. Delegates called for the modernisation of schools and boarding homes, promotion of digital tools, and the enrichment of academic, cultural, and sports programmes.

A highlight of the day came with Bishop Dr. Johannes Gorantla OCD’s announcement of a commitment to fund higher education for 100 students across the diocese up to post-graduation level.

The day concluded with the recitation of the Angelus and expressions of heartfelt gratitude from the bishop to all participants for their dedication and collaboration.
