Kurnool Diocesan Synod Emphasises Strengthening of Parish Pastoral Life

KURNOOL, 29 May 2025 — The Diocese of Kurnool continued its synodal journey on 28 May with a focused exploration of parish pastoral life. Most Rev. Dr. Johannes Gorantla, Bishop of Kurnool, invited Rev. Fr. Mallavarapu Sundar Rao, a Roman Catholic priest and Canon Law expert from Hyderabad, Telangana, to serve as the resource person for the day’s proceedings.

On the third day of the Kurnool Diocesan Synod 2025, the sessions centred around the theme “Parish Pastoral Life”, with particular attention given to the establishment of Parish Pastoral Councils and Finance Councils. The day began with the celebration of the Holy Mass, presided over by Fr. Sundar Rao. After the liturgy, the preparatory committee introduced the day’s theme, followed by Fr. Sundar’s engaging presentation on the parish’s role in fostering vocations and sustaining vibrant pastoral ministry. He highlighted, with reference to Canon Law, the ecclesial importance of forming pastoral and finance councils within parishes.

Participants, divided into ten groups, took part in two rounds of group discussions. The first session focused on Parish Pastoral Councils, and the second on Finance Councils. Each group appointed a secretary who later shared the group’s insights and proposals with the wider assembly.

In addition to the core discussions, participants raised several related concerns, including:

• Transparency in parish offerings and finances

• Welfare of parishioners and parish priests

• Structure, selection criteria, and responsibilities of council members

• Suggested age limits and term durations (e.g., five to six years)

• Moral and spiritual qualifications expected of council members, highlighting the need for integrity and dedication

Fr. Sundar Rao actively facilitated these sessions, offering clarifications and pastoral insights during floor discussions. He and Bishop Johannes also addressed participant questions, providing canonical and spiritual guidance.

Four sessions were held over the course of the day, each marked by active engagement and sincere dialogue. The discussions reflected a deep commitment to the renewal of pastoral structures and the strengthening of parish life across the Diocese of Kurnool. Two more days remain in this significant diocesan synod.
