Kolkata Marks 1700th Anniversary of Nicene Creed with Ecumenical Seminar

Kolkata, August 2, 2025: Kolkata commemorated the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed with an ecumenical seminar held at Bishop’s College, Beck Bagan, on 2 August 2025. The event brought together theological scholars, clergy, and students from various Christian traditions, celebrating a milestone in the history of Christian doctrine.

The seminar was organised by the Theological Colleges of Bengal—comprising Roman Catholic, Church of North India (CNI), and Orthodox institutions—and coordinated by Father Francis Sunil Rosario, Regional Secretary of the Commission of Ecumenism. He was supported by the Dean of Theology at Morning Star Regional College and Seminary, the Dr. Henry Jose MSFS, and the Dr. Sunil Caleb, Principal of Bishop’s College.

Representatives from Buntain Theology College (Assemblies of God) and Calcutta Bible Seminary also participated, underscoring the spirit of Christian unity and shared theological heritage.

The seminar opened with a welcome address by Dr. Caleb, followed by the keynote address from Fr. George Panthanmackel MSFS, Rector of Morning Star Regional Seminary. He set the tone for the day’s reflections on the enduring significance of the Nicene Creed.

Ms Christine Nathan, President of the Indian Christian Movement for Change (ICMC), delivered a thought-provoking talk on “The Nicene Creed – Its Impact on the Life of Christians”, highlighting its continuing relevance in the daily faith lives of believers.

The programme included three additional presentations: “Historical Perspective” by the Revd Dr Zadingluaia Chinzah of Serampore College, “Theological Perspective” by the Dr. Swarup Bar of Bishop’s College, and “Laity’s View: A Pastoral Perspective” by Mr Allan Noronha, popularly known as chotebhai.

The seminar drew significant attention with the presence of the newly-elected Coadjutor Bishop of Calcutta, Rt Revd Elias Frank, and Archbishop Most Revd Thomas D’Souza, adding ecclesial weight to the event.

A commemorative souvenir marking the 1700th anniversary of the Nicene Creed was also released during the occasion.

The event, hosted in the heart of Kolkata, stood as a powerful testimony to the unity of faith across denominations and reaffirmed the Nicene Creed’s foundational role in Christian belief through the centuries.
