New Delhi, June 28, 2026: In the aftermath of devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela, India has launched Operation Amistad, sending emergency medical assistance, specialised teams and relief supplies to support communities facing a major humanitarian crisis.
The mission reflects India’s growing role in international disaster response, with the country rapidly mobilising military and medical resources to assist Venezuela during a time of urgent need.
As part of the operation, two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft were deployed carrying an Indian Army medical contingent, essential supplies and advanced emergency healthcare equipment. The mission involved a long-distance journey of nearly 14,000 kilometres, demonstrating India’s commitment to providing assistance beyond its own borders.
The Indian Air Force transported more than 35 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Venezuela as part of Operation Amistad. The relief material included medicines, medical equipment, general supplies and resources required for emergency response operations.
The aircraft also carried a 41-member Indian Army medical team trained to provide immediate healthcare support in disaster conditions. Their arrival was aimed at strengthening Venezuela’s medical response capabilities at a time when hospitals and local healthcare facilities were under severe pressure.
The operation was carefully planned to ensure that essential assistance reached affected communities quickly. The C-17 Globemaster III, one of the Indian Air Force’s largest strategic transport aircraft, was chosen because of its ability to carry heavy equipment and travel long distances efficiently.
A key feature of Operation Amistad is the deployment of India’s advanced portable medical infrastructure. The Indian Army Field Hospital Unit was sent along with two BHISHM Cubes — modular emergency healthcare systems designed for rapid deployment during disasters.
These portable units can provide critical medical services in areas where existing healthcare facilities have been damaged or overwhelmed. Together, the two BHISHM Cubes are capable of treating up to 200 patients and can support emergency medical operations during the recovery phase.
The technology allows medical teams to establish functioning healthcare facilities quickly, providing treatment for injuries and other urgent medical conditions caused by natural disasters.
Operation Amistad continues India’s history of providing humanitarian assistance during global emergencies. Over the years, India has used its military transport capabilities and medical expertise to support countries affected by earthquakes, pandemics and other crises.
The Indian Air Force’s C-17 aircraft have previously played important roles in international relief missions, transporting medical supplies and emergency support to countries in need.
India’s disaster response approach combines logistics, medical expertise and rapid deployment capabilities. The inclusion of specialised field hospitals in Operation Amistad highlights a shift towards providing not only immediate relief supplies but also long-term medical support during recovery efforts.
The name “Amistad”, meaning friendship, reflects the humanitarian purpose behind India’s assistance to Venezuela. The mission is not only about delivering supplies but also about standing alongside another nation during a difficult period.
The arrival of Indian personnel and resources provides valuable support to Venezuelan authorities managing the aftermath of the earthquake. Medical teams, emergency equipment and relief supplies are expected to assist in treating survivors and helping communities begin the process of rebuilding.
Operation Amistad represents India’s commitment to humanitarian values and international cooperation. Through the deployment of medical teams, advanced field hospitals and essential supplies, India has extended a helping hand to Venezuela at a critical moment.
For families affected by the earthquake, the arrival of international assistance brings renewed hope and reassurance that they are not facing the crisis alone.
As recovery efforts continue, missions like Operation Amistad demonstrate how nations can come together during moments of tragedy, turning compassion and cooperation into meaningful action. India’s response stands as a reminder that in times of disaster, humanity remains the strongest force for rebuilding lives.
