Stockholm, 9 October 2025, – The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences today awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai “for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.”
Born in 1954 near the Romanian border, Krasznahorkai gained fame with his debut novel Sátántangó (1985, translated as Satantango in 2012). His latest work, Herscht 07769 (2025), portrays Germany’s social unrest with striking accuracy, blending violence and beauty against Bach’s legacy.
Other notable works include A Mountain to the North, a Lake to the South, Paths to the West, a River to the East (2003, translated 2022) and Seiobo There Below (2008, translated 2013), a Fibonacci-sequenced exploration of beauty in a fragile world.
The prize, carrying a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor will be presented on 10 December, continuing Alfred Nobel’s legacy of honouring humanity’s benefactors.
