From the Football Pitch to the Arms of the Father: Rijohn Jose Remembered in Faith

OLLUR, THRISSUR, September 23, 2026: The sudden death of 29-year-old footballer Rijohn Jose has left Kerala’s football community and his home parish in Ollur mourning the loss of a young man whose life was marked by sporting dedication, family ties and faith.

A defender with Calicut FC, Rijohn died in a road accident in Kozhikode in the early hours of September 21, just days before the beginning of the new Super League Kerala season. He was part of the Calicut FC squad that won the inaugural Super League Kerala title in 2024.

A Life Rooted in Faith and Family

Rijohn belonged to a Catholic family from Ollur, Thrissur, and his funeral rites were held at St Raphael’s Church, Ollur, bringing him home to the parish and community where his family has its roots. He is survived by his parents, M.P. Jose and Treesa Jose, and his brother, Tijo.

Growing up in a Catholic setting, Rijohn’s life was shaped not only by his passion for football but also by the faith and family environment of his home and parish. For the Catholic community that knew him, his funeral at St. Raphael’s was more than a farewell to a talented sportsman; it was an expression of Christian hope and entrustment of a young life to God.

A Defender Who Made His Mark

Rijohn built his professional career through several domestic clubs, including FC Deccan, Wayanad United, George Telegraph, Sreebhumi FC and Forca Kochi. He represented clubs in competitions including the Kerala Premier League and Calcutta Football League.

At Calicut FC, he became known for his defensive ability and physical presence, earning the nickname “The Interceptor”. His contribution was particularly remembered during the club’s historic 2024 Super League Kerala title campaign.

His death came at a painful moment for the club. Rijohn and fellow player Gani Ahammed Nigam had recently joined the team in Kozhikode for preparations for the new season, scheduled to begin on September 25.

A Sudden and Tragic Farewell

The accident occurred at about 10.40 pm on September 20 on the Gandhi Road flyover near Christian College in Kozhikode. The motorcycle carrying Rijohn and Gani collided with another two-wheeler. Rijohn suffered severe injuries and died at about 12.15 am on September 21 after being taken to hospital. Gani was injured and received medical treatment.

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from the football community, while police have registered a case and an investigation is under way.

Remembered Beyond the Football Field

For those who knew Rijohn, his legacy will not be confined to the football pitch. He will be remembered as a son, brother, parishioner and sportsman whose journey ended unexpectedly at just 29.

For Rijohn’s family, teammates and friends, his memory will remain intertwined with the game he loved, the community that supported him and the faith in which he was raised.
