Fr. Leenus to Assume New Role Despite Brutal Attack in Odisha

Odisha, 31 May, 2025 - Fr. Leenus Puthenveettil, a 90-year-old Carmelite priest from Kumbalangi, will take up his new role as Spiritual Director at a major seminary under the Odisha Bishops’ Council on 7 June—despite surviving a brutal assault by communal attackers. “I will assume the new responsibility,” he affirmed, even as threats persist warning him to leave or face death.

The attack took place at the seminary in Charbati, Sambalpur district, currently closed for vacation. Realising this, the assailants stormed the premises and unleashed two hours of horrific violence on Fr. Leenus and Fr. Silvin. They struck them with rods and wooden sticks, dragged them through the verandas, gagged them, and tied their limbs. “Leave immediately, or we’ll return,” the attackers warned before leaving.

Following instructions from Fr. Augustine Mullur, Provincial of the Manjumel Carmelite Congregation, the injured priests returned to Kerala for treatment. Fr. Silvin, who hails from Kalathil, Gothuruth, was barely able to sit or lie down during the journey.

Fr. Leenus managed to untie himself after nearly an hour. After receiving basic first aid, the priests celebrated Holy Mass, praying especially for their attackers. Fr. Leenus later informed a Malayala Manorama journalist about the incident.

A classmate of Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, Fr. Leenus speaks seven languages. He hasn’t had a fever in 15 years, credits his health to a strict routine—daily yoga and herbal medicines, which he prepares himself. He has also introduced medicinal and fruit plants to Odisha’s tribal villages.

The Catholic mission in Odisha, initiated by Jesuits, has seen Carmelite priests serving there for 30 years, founding schools and seminaries. Seventeen priests have been ordained from the region, a milestone Fr. Leenus proudly highlights.

To mark his priesthood’s golden jubilee, he launched an education initiative to support 25 tribal students annually, aiming to raise ₹40 lakh. With help from friends and family, ₹27 lakh has been collected.

Though retired from official duties at 75, Fr. Leenus continues his mission work with Church approval—an enduring testament to faith and resilience.
