Dawna, Daltonganj,11 May, 2025 – A landmark occasion unfolded in the heart of the forested village of Dawna as the foundation stone was laid for a new hostel on 9 May, that will provide shelter and educational support for underprivileged children from the Birjiya tribe.

The ceremony was led by Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas SFX, Bishop of the Diocese of Daltonganj, who blessed the site and officially laid the foundation stone. In his address, Bishop Theodore expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Holy Childhood agency for their generous support of the project. He also called upon the community to pray for the success and well-being of the children who will benefit from the hostel.

Among the dignitaries present were Fr. Sanjay Gidh, Vicar General of the Diocese; Fr. Marcus Baa, Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish, Dawna; Fr. Simplicius Kerketta, Assistant Priest; and Fr. Roshan Toppo, Assistant Director of Minor Seminary Vianney Bhawan, Chianki. The event also saw the active participation of the Don Bosco Sisters, members of Seeds of Hope Spirituality, and 70 brothers from Vianney Bhawan Seminary.

Adding to the joyful atmosphere, 50 children—future residents of the hostel—were present, their excitement reflecting the hope this new initiative brings.

The hostel promises to be a sanctuary for the Birjiya children, offering them not only a safe living space but also opportunities for education and personal growth. This ceremony marks a vital step forward in uplifting one of the region’s most marginalised communities through compassion and committed action.
