Discernment Calls Indian Church to Deepen Communion Says Fr Joe Xavier

Bengaluru, May 1, 2026: At the CCBI National Synodal Assembly, Jesuit theologian Fr Joe Xavier called on delegates to embrace communal discernment as the pathway to deeper communion, shared mission, and pastoral renewal in the Church in India.

Addressing Cardinals, bishops, priests, religious, and lay leaders, he highlighted the synodal principle of shared responsibility, stressing that while the Church has different ministries and offices, all are equal in dignity and mission. "There are cardinals, bishops, priests, religious, and laity, but all share an equal responsibility in building the Church," he said.

He explained that authentic discernment begins in prayer and inner awareness. Participants, he noted, must speak not from personal preference but from what they genuinely believe God is asking of them. This demands attentiveness to one's inner movements and openness to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Xavier emphasised that discernment must always focus on the common good, avoiding self-referential concerns and personal agendas. Humility, he said, is indispensable both in sharing and in listening. Genuine discernment also requires letting go of ideological attachments, personal ambitions, and disordered affections.

"The purpose of this process is to build a 'we feeling'," he said. "We are not concerned merely with survival or companionship. We are called to communion. We are together for communion."

He urged delegates to silence external distractions that often cloud interior freedom. Discernment, he added, calls for a compassionate and sometimes unconventional approach while preserving unity within the group and fidelity to the wider Church.

Outlining the roadmap of communal discernment, Fr. Xavier said the process begins by clearly formulating the question to be placed before God. This is followed by a grateful reflection on the Church's history, a renewed encounter with its identity, and a commitment to embodying the compassionate face of Jesus through communion and reconciliation.

Participants must then listen attentively to the desires and aspirations of all, discern the most appropriate response, and choose the path that will lead people closer to God. These choices must ultimately be confirmed through prayer, pastoral planning, and personal commitment.

He also warned against three common temptations: nurturing many dreams without concrete action, doing many things while neglecting the one thing necessary, and rushing ahead without pausing for prayerful reflection.

Fr. Xavier described spiritual consensus as the fruit of a prayerful process in which participants not only understand one another but arrive at a common conviction under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

He concluded by identifying four essential dimensions of communal discernment: prayer over the matter, active listening, intentional speaking, and deep deliberation leading to consensus.

His address offered delegates a compelling framework for synodal decision-making, reaffirming that the Church in India can move forward only through prayer, dialogue, and authentic communion.
