CCBI Youth Commission Holds Nine-Day Virtual Prayer Service in Memory of Pope Francis

New Delhi, April 30, 2025 — The Youth Commission of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) organised a nine-day virtual prayer service from April 21 to 29 to pray for the soul of late Pope Francis and reflect on his life and legacy. The initiative united young Catholics from 14 regions across India in daily evening gatherings of prayer and remembrance.

Throughout the nine days, the youth engaged in daily devotions, including the Holy Rosary, intercessory prayers, and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. These sessions were led by various national and regional youth groups, such as the ICYM National Team, CCBI Youth Commission Council members and advisors, YCS/YSM National Team, Divine Youth Team of Kerala, and Regional Youth Presidents. Over 40 youth, alongside clergy from various dioceses, consistently engaged in the daily spiritual observance.

The concluding day of the service featured a special interaction session marked by moving tributes and reflections. Over 56 youth and clergy participated, sharing their personal memories and experiences with Pope Francis. Rev. Fr. Chetan Machado, Secretary of the CCBI Youth Commission, recounted his encounter with the Pope, emphasising the Holy Father’s humility and deep care for youth.

Prominent youth leaders also recounted their encounters with the late pontiff. Mr. Percival Holt, Advisor to the CCBI Youth Commission, recalled his meeting with Pope Francis at the 2018 Synod, highlighting the Pope’s humility, simplicity, and wisdom. He also shared the inspiring words which the late pontiff had spoken on that occasion: “Go forward with courage, dream big, and don’t be afraid.”

Mr. Raj Bagh, ICYM National President, recounted his experience of meeting Pope Francis at the 2024 Youth Congress. He shared that during that encounter, the Pope had affectionately remarked that “youth make noise.”

Ms. Freya Francis, a member of the International Youth Advisory Body, offered moving reflections on the late pontiff's influence on young people globally. She also shared her personal experiences of his pastoral care and presence. Adv. Anthony Judy, former ICYM President, too, recalled a profound encounter with the late Pope during World Youth Day 2023.

The nine-day virtual gathering served not only as a tribute to the late Holy Father but also as a celebration of his enduring spiritual legacy among the youth. Through prayer, reflection, and shared memories, the initiative offered a heartfelt farewell and honoured Pope Francis’s deep bond with young people.
