CCBI Expresses Solidarity with Victims of Nepal Floods, Appeals for Prayer and Support

New Delhi, August 28, 2026: As devastating floods and landslides continue to leave a trail of death and destruction along the Nepal-China border region, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) has expressed sorrow and solidarity with the victims, their families and communities facing the aftermath of the disaster.

In a press statement issued on August 28, the CCBI said it joins Pope Leo XIV in offering heartfelt condolences and prayers for the bereaved families, the injured, and all those who have lost their homes and livelihoods in the tragedy.

“Just as the Holy Father has assured the victims of his spiritual closeness, so too do we, as the CCBI, stand close to our brothers and sisters in this hour of grief,” the statement said.

On behalf of the Catholic Church in India, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the CCBI, appealed to members of the hierarchy, the faithful, religious congregations, institutions and people of goodwill to respond to the crisis with prayer, compassion and practical solidarity, “in whatever way each is able.”

The CCBI urged the faithful to pray for those who have lost their lives, for consolation and strength for their grieving families, and for the safety of those involved in rescue and relief operations. In a prayer for those affected by the disaster, the CCBI invoked God’s mercy for “healing to the injured, comfort to the bereaved, and hope to all who face this disaster.”
