CBCI Welcomes Bail for Sisters Preethi and Vandana, Calls for Case to Be Quashed

New Delhi, 2 August 2025 – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed relief and gratitude following the bail granted to Sister Preethi and Sister Vandana by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Bilaspur on Saturday. The case, which has caused significant concern among Christian communities across India, saw a positive turn as both sisters were released from custody.

The CBCI extended its appreciation to both the Government of India and the Government of Chhattisgarh for their timely intervention and cooperation in the matter. “We are grateful to the Government for the support shown in this case,” said Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, President of the CBCI. “We hope this marks the beginning of renewed efforts to protect the rights and dignity of all religious minorities in our secular democracy.”

The CBCI reiterated the need to uphold the constitutional rights of all minorities, especially the right to freedom of religion, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

In a strong show of unity, the CBCI also thanked the wider Church in India—regardless of denomination—along with political leaders, civil society members and concerned citizens who stood in solidarity with the sisters during this challenging time.

The organisation called for the case to be immediately quashed, pointing out that the girls involved are legally adults and already Christians. It stressed that continuing such proceedings not only lacks legal merit but also adds to the increasing harassment of religious sisters, clergy and laypeople.

The CBCI urged the government to implement effective measures to prevent further incidents of intimidation and false accusations against members of religious communities, particularly nuns and priests known for their selfless service throughout the country.

Reaffirming its commitment to peace, justice and the rule of law, the CBCI encouraged all citizens of goodwill to continue defending constitutional rights and supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving others.
