CBCI Legal Cell Holds Meeting on Escalating Human Rights Violations

New Delhi, 1 May 2025– The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) held a crucial meeting on 1 May at its New Delhi office under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Mathew Koyickal, Deputy Secretary General of CBCI. Organised by the CBCI Legal Cell, the session addressed the disturbing surge in human rights violations across the nation.

Attendees voiced serious concern regarding the growing atrocities and persecution experienced by minority communities in multiple regions. Responding to the urgency of the situation, participants unanimously agreed on the necessity of establishing a Human Rights Committee to address these issues with immediate effect.

The meeting resulted in the formation of a fact-finding team tasked with studying, evaluating, intervening in, and documenting incidents of human rights violations as they occur. This team will coordinate with regional units of the Catholic Church to ensure comprehensive coverage. Furthermore, each diocese will form a three-member committee to facilitate effective ground-level implementation.

Key attendees included Advocates P. I. Jose, Fr. Nirdosh Ekka, Sr. Mary Scaria, Sr. Sneha Gill, Sr. Tresa Paul, Sr. Asha Paul, and Mr. David Naulak. Sr. Sayujya, Secretary of the Legal Cell, expressed gratitude to all members for their prompt and dedicated response to the critical issues confronting society.
