Catholic Church Urged to Move Beyond Bureaucracy and Embrace Mercy

KOCHI, October 6, 2026: The Catholic Church must respond to changing social realities with greater mercy, social responsibility and sensitivity, speakers told a Laity Conclave held as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC).


Dr. Nirmal Ouseppachan IAS, Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, inaugurated the conclave and said the Church has a particular responsibility to demonstrate mercy in addressing contemporary social challenges.


“The time for the Church to cease being bureaucratic is past,” he said, urging Church institutions to understand the distinct needs and interests of communities before launching projects. He also called for openness to criticism and the ability to receive it with equanimity.


KRLCC Vice President Joseph Jude presided over the meeting, while Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan of Punalur delivered the benedictory address.


The conclave featured reflections on the mission and social responsibility of the laity, with former Workers India Federation president Joy Gothuruth presenting a paper on the theme. Other speakers included Alappuzha Diocese Vicar General Msgr. Joy Puthenveettil, A. D. Thomas MLA, KLCA State President Sherry J. Thomas, KRLCC General Secretary Fr. Dr. Jiju George Arakkathara and KCBC Deputy Secretary General Fr. Thomas Tharayil.


A panel discussion examined contemporary challenges before the Church and society, focusing on lay responsibility, youth participation, family life, social justice and issues confronting coastal communities. KIFB Additional CEO Mini Antony IAS, A. D. Thomas MLA and former KCYMM State President Sony Pavelil participated in the discussion.


Bishop James Anaparambil of Alappuzha inaugurated the valedictory session, while Auxiliary Bishop Justin Alexander Madathiparambil of Vijayapuram delivered the valedictory message.


The proceedings were coordinated by Laity Commission Secretary Fr. Benny Pootharayil, Patrick Michael and Metilda Michael.
