Akola, Maharashtra, 3 June, 2025: The Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC) officially began their pastoral and educational mission at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Akola, on June 1, 2025, when Bishop Malcolm Sequeira of the Diocese of Amravati blessed their new residence and laid the foundation stone for their convent. The solemn event took place on the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, marking a significant milestone for the parish and the religious congregation.
The ceremony commenced with Bishop Sequeira blessing and laying the foundation stone for the new convent, followed by a festive Eucharistic celebration attended by clergy, religious, and parishioners. The bishop presided over the Mass, emphasising the significance of the MSMHC Sisters’ presence in Akola and their future role in serving the community.
Key dignitaries present for the celebration included Rev. Fr. Ramsheen, Vicar General of the Diocese; Sr. Sisily Cherian, MSMHC General Councillor for Formation; Sr. Asha Paul, Provincial Superior of St. Joseph’s Tezpur Province; and Sr. Rani Matthew, Provincial Councillor of the same province. Sisters Merilla Murmu, Rica Lyngdoh, and Alice Deter Bagra also participated in the celebration. Several priests from the Diocese of Amravati were present to lend their support to the event.
Bishop Malcolm commended Rev. Fr. Joselin, the parish priest, for his dedicated efforts in organising the event. He praised Fr. Joselin’s leadership, noting that his meticulous coordination contributed to the deeply spiritual and memorable nature of the celebration.
Following the Mass, a felicitation programme was held, during which the visiting dignitaries were honoured. After this, Bishop Sequeira blessed the newly completed residence of the MSMHC Sisters. The day concluded with a joyful community meal shared by all attendees, reinforcing the spirit of unity and mission.
The establishment of the MSMHC convent at Mount Carmel Church marks the beginning of a new chapter of faith and service in Akola. The Sisters are expected to play a vital role in pastoral care and education in the parish and the broader community.
