Belgaum Diocese Hosts Sacrament-Centred Lenten Retreat for Children

Belgaum, February 24, 2026 — Emphasising forgiveness and spiritual renewal during Lent, the Diocese of Belgaum organised a one-day retreat for children of the Belgaum Deanery on the eve of Holy Childhood Sunday, placing the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the heart of the programme.

The retreat, spearheaded by the diocesan Commission for Children under the leadership of Fr. Cyril Fernandes, was organised in response to a pastoral circular encouraging special Lenten initiatives. The commission supported the programme’s planning and logistics, including sponsorship of meals for participants.

Held under the leadership of Fr. Victor D’Cruz, Dean of Belgaum, the retreat was prayerfully coordinated by Fr. Santosh Jude to foster deeper spiritual awareness among young participants. Around 200 children from across the deanery attended, accompanied by priests and religious.

Age-appropriate catechesis formed a central component of the gathering. Fr. Rajendra animated a faith session for the children, while Br. Rakesh Francis conducted a specially designed class for students of Standards IV and V. The children were later guided into personal reflection through an Examination of Conscience led by Fr. Gerald D’Silva and Fr. Govind.

A highlight of the retreat was the solemn penitential celebration conducted according to the Rite of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The service included a prayerful procession, Gospel proclamation, and a reflection by Bishop Derek Fernandes, who explained the reality of sin and the depth of divine mercy through interactive engagement with the children.

Nearly sixteen priests were available to administer the sacrament, and all participating children received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The bishop himself also heard confessions, lending a deeply pastoral dimension to the occasion.

The retreat concluded with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Fernandes. In his homily, he reflected on the temptations of Jesus and encouraged the children to remain attentive to God’s voice in their daily lives.

With careful planning and strong pastoral focus, the initiative provided a spiritually enriching Lenten experience for young faithful, underscoring the diocesan commitment to nurturing faith formation among children.
