ASRO Goa: Empowering Children with HIV/AIDS to Lead Independent Lives

Located in the serene village of Thivim in North Goa, ASRO is a care home for children with HIV/AIDS. The center, initiated by Caritas Goa and managed by the Holy Cross Sisters, began operating in 2002. The acronym ASRO stands for Acceptance, Solidarity, Reassurance, and Outreach. ASRO offers shelter and comprehensive care for children with HIV/AIDS, providing clinical management of infections, early diagnosis, treatment for opportunistic infections, and nutritional support. Additionally, the children receive home nursing care, which includes relief from symptoms, personal hygiene, infection control, and palliative and terminal care.

The children at ASRO are either fully or partially orphaned due to the illness and death of their parents, most of whom also had HIV/AIDS. HIV-positive children face significant social stigma and discrimination, which adds to their challenges. These children require support in their education and encouragement from society to help them lead longer and more productive lives.

ASRO works to promote the social inclusion and education of these children by ensuring their enrollment in regular schools. The center also supports the children in continuing their education after they complete their SSC. Many pursue further studies, while some opt for vocational training, which prepares them for careers in fields like hotel management, nursing, and beauty care. As a result, several children from ASRO have successfully integrated into society, securing employment and living independently.

The teachers at ASRO also teach the children various skills such as music, art and craft, drawing, and flower making. Many of the children demonstrate incredible talent and display tremendous potential. They also learn various indoor and outdoor games.

Since HIV/AIDS severely compromises the immune system, the children at ASRO are provided with a diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, along with regular medication, counseling, and specialized care. The caregivers at ASROM regularly take the children for medical check-ups and blood tests to monitor their health.

The success of ASRO shines through the stories of children who grew up there and went on to lead healthy, independent lives. Many have started their own families and have HIV-negative children, demonstrating the lasting impact of the care and support they received.
