AI Flaws Create New Opportunities for Creative Professionals

The rapid rise of generative AI has promised unprecedented efficiency across industries. However, it has also given birth to a flood of low-quality outputs—often referred to as “AI slop”. Rather than eliminating human creativity, these imperfect outputs are fuelling a new niche market where creative professionals are earning income by refining and repairing AI-generated work, according to a recent article published on NewsBytes.


New Opportunities for Designers


One such professional is Lisa Carstens, a Spanish graphic designer who once feared AI would make her job obsolete. Today, she finds herself busier than ever, as startups and individuals turn to her for help fixing poorly executed AI-generated logos. These designs often feature messy lines and illegible text.


 “There are people who know AI isn’t perfect, and then there are people who come to you angry because they couldn’t do it themselves with AI,” Carstens says.


A Growing Market for Gig Workers


The limitations of AI systems have opened a new job market for gig workers. Writers are being hired to polish ChatGPT-generated content, artists are correcting flawed AI images, and developers are debugging code produced by AI assistants. An MIT report cited in the NewsByte article revealed that approximately 95% of businesses’ AI pilot programmes yield no return on investment, largely because these systems fail to adapt or learn over time.


Freelance Writers Face New Challenges


Freelance writers are also witnessing this shift. Georgia-based writer Kiesha Richardson says that about half of her current assignments involve editing or rewriting AI-generated articles that “don’t look remotely human”. However, she noted that many clients undervalue this work, offering lower pay despite the effort required to humanise poorly written AI drafts.


Demand Surge on Freelance Platforms


As businesses struggle with their AI strategies, freelance platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr have reported a surge in demand for creative work. Upwork has seen growth in tasks requiring strategic thinking, such as content strategising or creative art direction. Meanwhile, Fiverr reported a 250% increase in demand for niche tasks such as web design and book illustration over the past six months.


Consumer Backlash Against AI Usage


Despite the growing appeal of artificial intelligence, some brands are facing backlash for using it. Last month, Guess, an American clothing company, received significant criticism from netizens after featuring an AI-generated model in a Vogue advertisement. This incident highlights that, beyond technical capabilities, many clients and consumers still value the human touch in content, even in an increasingly AI-saturated market.
