A Ray of Hope’: Chaitanya Restores Mobility and Dignity to the Specially-Abled in Shivamogga

Shivamogga, April 13, 2026 — In a quiet yet transformative gesture of compassion, the Shimoga Multipurpose Social Service Society (SMSSS) has brought renewed hope to 30 specially-abled individuals through its ‘Chaitanya’ initiative, distributing free wheelchairs at its Alkola premises on April 9, 2026.

The programme, which benefited 30 individuals, went beyond the simple provision of assistive devices, emerging as a powerful affirmation of dignity, inclusion, and self-reliance. For many recipients, the wheelchairs marked a turning9ooo9omobility but also a renewed sense of independence and belonging.

Addressing the gathering, SMSSS Director Fr. Pius D’Souza emphasised that the initiative seeks to nurture both physical and emotional empowerment. “We want to inspire them to develop a positive mindset and build a life rooted in self-assurance,” he said.

Drawing inspiration from the spirit of the Paralympics, he reflected on the deeper meaning of human solidarity.

“True humanity is seen when a competitor falls, and others turn back to help them move forward together. Success is not just about winning alone; it is about winning alongside everyone.”

The initiative forms part of SMSSS’s longstanding commitment to social outreach in the districts of Shivamogga, Davanagere, and Chitradurga. For over 37 years, the organisation has served marginalised communities, engaging with women, children, farmers, youth, and cancer patients.

The wheelchair distribution was made possible through the generosity of donors, notably Mrs Nelly Picardo of Bengaluru, whose contribution was acknowledged with gratitude during the event.

Adding a practical dimension to the programme, Mr Kiran from the Disability Department of the Association of People, Bengaluru, offered hands-on guidance on the assembly, maintenance, and effective use of the wheelchairs, ensuring that beneficiaries could fully benefit from the support provided.

Beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation, describing the initiative as life-changing—particularly for those facing economic hardship.

Many shared that such interventions do more than address physical limitations; they restore confidence and open pathways to fuller participation in society.

Through ‘Chaitanya,’ SMSSS once again underscores a vital truth: that meaningful acts of care, rooted in compassion and solidarity, can bridge the gap between limitation and possibility—empowering individuals to move forward with dignity and hope.
