“A New Heart, A New Spirit”: Lenten Retreat Draws Hundreds to Renewal in Lucknow

Lucknow, March 28, 2026: A profound sense of spiritual renewal and interior transformation marked a two-day Lenten retreat organised by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lucknow, bringing together nearly a thousand faithful at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Church, while an equal number participated online through the diocesan YouTube channel.

Rooted in the prophetic promise of Ezekiel—“I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them”—the retreat invited participants to journey towards deeper conversion during the sacred season of Lent. The gathering commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Fr. Denis Naresh Lobo, setting a reflective tone for the days ahead.

Moments of prayer and devotion followed, as the faithful entrusted their intentions to the Blessed Virgin Mary through the Rosary, complemented by vibrant sessions of praise and worship that fostered a spirit of communal participation.

The retreat featured spiritually enriching reflections led by Fr. Lawrence Devin Noronha and Fr. Sebastian CMI, who guided participants through Scripture-based teachings and Lenten themes of repentance, healing, and renewal. Adding a dynamic dimension to the gathering, Brother Moksha led the music ministry, drawing the faithful into a deeper experience of prayer through song.

Throughout the retreat, participants responded with visible devotion, engaging attentively with the Word of God and availing themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Several attendees shared testimonies of spiritual and even physical healing, underscoring the transformative grace experienced during the gathering.

The retreat culminated in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist presided over by Bishop Gerald John Mathias of Lucknow, uniting the faithful in thanksgiving and renewed commitment to their faith journey.

As Lent continues to call believers to conversion and reconciliation, the retreat in Lucknow stood as a powerful reminder of God’s promise to renew hearts and restore spirits, drawing the faithful ever closer to Him.
