42nd Life Orientation Programme of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement, Agra, Inaugurated in Lucknow

Lucknow, May 20, 2025 — The 42nd Life Orientation Programme (LOP) of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Agra Region was inaugurated on May 20, 2025, at the Navinta Training Centre in the Diocese of Lucknow. Hosted by the Diocese of Meerut, the event witnessed the participation of 66 young people from 9 dioceses across the region.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of the Archbishop Emeritus of Agra Archdiocese, His Grace Bishop Albert D’Souza, the pioneer of LOP, who initiated this visionary programme in 1998 in the Diocese of Meerut. His continued presence and guidance remain a source of inspiration for the youth of the region.

The ceremony began with a warm welcome for Archbishop Emeritus Albert D’Souza by the Regional Youth Director, Fr Joel Fernandes, who presented him with a sapling, symbolising growth and life. This was followed by a diocesan flag march, where all participants proudly carried their respective flags and proceeded toward the venue of the Holy Eucharist.

The Holy Eucharist was solemnly celebrated by Bishop Albert D’Souza, who shared the inspiring story of how LOP began with the mission of nurturing vocations among young people. A special moment during the Mass was the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of Bishop D’Souza, honouring his remarkable 50 years of priesthood.

The inaugural ceremony was formally hosted by the Diocese of Meerut, welcoming distinguished guests, including the Chief Guest, Rev. Msgr. Fr Naresh Lobo, Vicar General of the Diocese of Lucknow and Director of Navinta Training Centre; Fr Robert Monteiro, Administrator of Navinta Training Centre; Fr Joel Fernandes, Regional Youth Director of Agra Region; and Fr Melvin Robin, Diocesan Youth Director of Meerut Diocese. Also present were the REXCO team, all diocesan animators, and the enthusiastic participants.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp, followed by a vibrant prayer dance and cultural animation by the Diocese of Meerut, setting a spiritual and celebratory tone for the gathering.

In his address, Fr Naresh Lobo, also the chief guest of the inaugural ceremony, officially declared LOP 2025 open, igniting excitement and anticipation for the days ahead. The ceremony reflected unity, tradition, and the collective energy of the region’s youth, marking a meaningful beginning to this important annual event.

The 42nd Life Orientation Programme (LOP) is an 18-day intensive residential programme that commenced on 19 May and will conclude on 6 June 2025. It is designed to help young people discern their vocation in life—whether religious, missionary, or lay—and deepen their spiritual connection with Christ. 66 young participants from nine dioceses across the region are participating in the event.

The primary aim of LOP is to guide participants through a journey of self-discovery, spiritual awakening, and leadership formation. Through a well-structured schedule that includes Holy Eucharist, personal prayer, inspirational talks, group discussions, recreational activities, and community living, the programme provides a holistic environment for youth to reflect on their life choices and future paths.

Each day of the LOP is crafted to help participants grow not only in faith but also in emotional maturity, discipline, and service-mindedness. With the support of experienced resource persons, priests, religious sisters, and trained animators, the participants are encouraged to explore their inner calling and understand the importance of living a Christ-centred life.

Above all, LOP aims to build a community of committed, faith-filled, and mission-driven young leaders who are ready to serve the Church and society with love, courage, and conviction.
