July 9, 2026: Every July, Catholics around the world are invited to reflect on one of the deepest mysteries of the Christian faith – the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ. Rooted in Scripture and centuries of Catholic tradition, this devotion reminds believers of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross and the immeasurable love through which humanity received redemption.
Although the Feast of the Precious Blood is no longer celebrated universally on 1 July, the Church continues to dedicate the entire month to honouring the Precious Blood of Christ, encouraging the faithful to renew their appreciation of His saving sacrifice.
The devotion to the Precious Blood centres on the belief that Jesus freely shed His Blood for the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of the world. Throughout His Passion – from His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane to His crucifixion on Calvary – Christ poured out His life as the perfect sacrifice for humanity.
The New Testament repeatedly highlights the importance of Christ's Blood. In the Letter to the Hebrews, believers are reminded that Christ entered the heavenly sanctuary "with His own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption" (Hebrews 9:12). Likewise, St John writes that "the blood of Jesus... cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).
For Catholics, these passages are not merely symbolic but express the heart of God's plan of salvation.
The Church's special devotion to the Precious Blood gained wider recognition during the nineteenth century.
In 1849, following his safe return to Rome after a period of political exile, Pope Pius IX extended the Feast of the Most Precious Blood to the universal Church as an expression of thanksgiving.

Later, Pope St Pius X fixed its annual celebration on 1 July, while Pope Pius XI elevated it to the rank of a Solemnity in 1934 during the 1900th anniversary of Christ's Redemption.
Although the feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar following the Second Vatican Council's liturgical reforms, July remains dedicated to the Precious Blood. Many parishes continue to celebrate votive Masses and devotional prayers throughout the month, while the traditional 1 July celebration continues in the Holy Land by special permission.
The devotion is closely linked to the Eucharist, the source and summit of Catholic life.
The Church teaches that the same Blood shed on Calvary is made sacramentally present at every Mass under the appearance of consecrated wine.
Through the Eucharist, Catholics believe they truly receive the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ.
For this reason, July serves as a reminder to deepen one's participation in the Mass, receive Holy Communion worthily, and spend time in Eucharistic Adoration, contemplating Christ's enduring presence.
The Church encourages several spiritual practices during July to honour the Precious Blood of Jesus.
Many Catholics pray the Litany of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, which was officially promulgated by Pope St John XXIII in 1960. The litany reflects on the saving power of Christ's Blood, invoking it as the price of humanity's redemption, the source of mercy, strength and hope.
Others pray the Chaplet of the Precious Blood, meditate on Christ's Passion, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, or offer prayers for the conversion of sinners and the healing of a troubled world.
These devotions invite believers to place their trust in God's mercy and to remember the immeasurable price paid for their salvation.
In a world often marked by conflict, suffering and uncertainty, the devotion to the Precious Blood offers a powerful reminder of God's unfailing love.
The Blood of Christ speaks not of despair but of forgiveness, reconciliation and new life. It reminds Christians that no sin is beyond God's mercy and no suffering is without meaning when united to Christ's sacrifice.
As Catholics journey through the month of July, they are invited to renew their faith in the redeeming power of Christ's Precious Blood, drawing closer to Him through prayer, the Eucharist and acts of charity. It remains a timeless devotion that continues to inspire hope, gratitude and a deeper appreciation of the sacrifice that lies at the heart of the Christian faith.
