Vatican City, July 1, 2025: The Vatican will release the official text of a new votive Mass during a press conference scheduled for July 4 at the Holy See Press Office in Rome. A press note issued by the Holy See on June 30 stated that this press conference will be the launch pad for the new Mass.
“There will be a press conference to present the new form of the Mass ‘pro custodia creationis’, which will be added to the Masses ‘pro variis necessitatibus vel ad diversa’ of the Roman Missal,” the note read. The Mass is expected to be included in the list of votive Masses in the Roman Missal.
The text for the new Mass will be presented during the press conference by Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., Prefect of the Dicastery for Service of Integral Human Development, and Archbishop Vittorio Viola, OFM, secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship.
Although the exact timeline of the new Mass's development remains unclear, it was most likely initiated during Pope Francis's pontificate. The late pontiff had made the “care of creation” a prominent theme throughout his papacy, dedicating numerous speeches and addresses to it.
This latest liturgical development comes amid the ongoing three-year experimental phase of the Amazon rite and the proposed Mayan rite, both of which aim to incorporate local indigenous customs. Unlike these rites, the Mass for the Care of Creation is not an inculturated rite but rather a votive Mass intended for universal application.
