Hyderabad, July 29, 2025 – The Archdiocese of Hyderabad commemorated the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne—parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary—by celebrating the 5th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. This year’s celebration, held in the spirit of the Jubilee Year, reflected the theme chosen by the late Pope Francis: “Blessed are those who have not lost hope” (Sirach 14:2), emphasising the Christian vision of ageing with grace and purpose.
The day began with a warm welcome and registration of guests. Patricia Hayden opened the programme by outlining the significance of the event and the day's agenda, setting a heartfelt tone. A young participant highlighted the theme during the introduction to the Eucharistic celebration, echoing the central message of hope rooted in faith.
The solemn Holy Mass was the highlight of the celebration, with Fr. Y. M. Joseph as the main celebrant. He was joined by several priests including Fr. Victor Emmanuel, Fr. Raju Alex, and others. Delivering the homily, Fr. Raju Alex, Deputy Secretary of TCBC, reflected on God’s providential love for the elderly, drawing on biblical examples such as Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Zachariah, and Elizabeth. He reminded the faithful that old age, though marked by vulnerability, can become venerable when lived in faith. He also highlighted the crucial role grandparents – affectionately described as “re-cycled parents” – play in nurturing younger generations.
At the close of the Mass, Fr. Victor Emmanuel conveyed the greetings and blessings of Cardinal Poola Anthony. He acknowledged the invaluable contributions of elders in family and community life, underlining the importance of honouring their wisdom and dedication.
The Mass was brought to life by the melodious hymns of the St. Joseph’s Church Youth Choir, Bolarum, whose music deeply touched those present. A brief cultural programme followed, featuring engaging performances by “Gray and Graceful” – the Archdiocese’s seniors’ group. Their lively enactments of “Kodi Pilla” and the group dance to “Pearly Shells” drew applause and joy from the audience. Prizes were distributed for special achievements of elders, and all participants received commemorative mementoes from the Archdiocese.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, a group photograph, and a shared meal, fostering a spirit of fellowship. The celebration served as a moving reminder of the enduring role of grandparents and the elderly, whose love and wisdom remain a beacon of hope for families and the Church.
