Fr. Mathew Kokandam, Long-Serving Vicar General of Jalandhar Diocese, Dies at 86

The Diocese of Jalandhar is mourning the loss of its beloved Vicar General, Fr. Mathew Kokandam, who passed away on February 24, 2025, at the age of 86. Fr. Mathew dedicated 54 years of his life to serving the Lord and the people of Punjab with sincerity, dedication, and integrity.


Born on October 10, 1939, in Parapuzha, Kerala, Fr. Mathew was ordained as a priest on October 14, 1971. He began his missionary work in Punjab, serving in various capacities, including Parish Priest, Director of schools, and Diocesan Procurator. His exceptional leadership skills and architectural talent led to the construction of numerous churches, schools, and institutions across the diocese.


Fr. Mathew's love for Mother Mary was evident in his devotion to reciting three Hail Marys after every Holy Eucharist and constructing grottos in her honor. He served under five bishops, including Msgr. Alban Swarbrick, Bishop Symphorian Keeprath, Archbishop Anil Couto, Bishop Franco Mulakkal, and Bishop Agnelo Gracias.


As Vicar General, Fr. Mathew Kokkandam played a pivotal role in founding and constructing numerous institutions, including St. Francis Convent School (Taran Taran), Caritas Mission Hospital (Bhikhiwind), St. John Mary Vianney Seminary (Amritsar), and Trinity College (Jalandhar). He was instrumental in acquiring land and establishing schools, churches, and convents across Punjab, leaving a lasting impact on the Diocese of Jalandhar.


The Diocese of Jalandhar has expressed its gratitude for Fr. Mathew's selfless service and dedication. In a statement, the Chancellor of the Diocese of Jalandhar said, "We are grateful to God for the gift of Fr. Mathew and for all that God has accomplished in and through him for the Church, especially for the Diocese of Jalandhar."


Fr. Mathew's legacy will continue to inspire and guide the people of Punjab, and his memory will be cherished forever. As the Diocese of Jalandhar bids farewell to its beloved Vicar General, it remembers his words of wisdom, his kindness, and his unwavering commitment to serving the Lord.
