ಕೊಂಕಣಿ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆಕ್ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ್ ಮಾನ್: ಎಚ್. ಎಮ್. ಪೆರ್ನಾಲಾಕ್ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ
MANGALURU, MARCH 23: In a significant milestone for Karnataka’s literary circles, renowned Mangalurean Konkani writer, critic, and journalist H.M. Pernal (Henry Mendonca) has been selected for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2025. The honor, announced by the National Academy of Letters, recognizes his outstanding contribution to literary criticism through his work, Konkani Kavyem: Rupam Ani Rupakam (2021).
Pernal etches his name in history as the first Konkani writer to receive this national award specifically for a work of literary criticism. He is only the fourth Konkani litterateur from Karnataka to be bestowed with this honor, following stalwarts Cha. Fra. D’Costa (1992), Melvyn Rodrigues (2011), and Edwin J.F. D’Souza (2016).
The Diocese of Mangalore and the Konkani Catholic community extend their heartiest congratulations to H.M. Pernal on this monumental achievement, which brings immense pride to the region and the community at large.
Born in Pernal, Udupi, Henry Mendonça’s journey began in the 1980s as a cartoonist. Over four decades, he has evolved into a multifaceted literary figure. As the founder of the Konkani literary web portal Kittall and the monthly magazine Arso, he has been a pioneer in digitizing Konkani literature and mentoring emerging voices.
Konkani Kavyem: Rupam Ani Rupakam is an analytical exploration of Konkani poetry. Before clinching the national award, the book earned the 'Best Book' accolades from both the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Akademi (2021) and the Goa Konkani Akademi (2023). It features a foreword by Jnanpith awardee Damodar Mauzo.
With over 850 poems, 100 short stories, and 2,000 articles to his credit, Pernal’s bibliography includes:
Beyond his personal writing, Pernal serves as the Chief Editor of the Michael D’Souza ‘Vision Konkani’ Book Grant Scheme, a ₹40 lakh project dedicated to publishing 100 Konkani books. He currently serves as the Treasurer of the All India Konkani Parishad and is a member of the Sahitya Akademi’s Konkani Advisory Board.

'ಕೊಂಕಣಿ ಕಾವ್ಯೆಂ: ರೂಪಾಂ ಅನಿ ರೂಪಕಾಂ' ಕೃತಿ ಕೊಂಕಣಿ ಕಾವ್ಯಾಚೆಂ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣ್ ಕರ್ತಾ. ಹಿ ಕೃತಿ ಕೇಂದ್ರ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಜೊಡ್ಚ್ಯಾ ಪಯ್ಲೆಂ, 2021-ಂತ್ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಕೊಂಕಣಿ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಚಿ 'ಉತ್ತಮ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕ್' ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಅನಿ 2023-ಂತ್ ಗೊಂಯ್ ಕೊಂಕಣಿ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಚಿ 'ಉತ್ತಮ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕ್' ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಜೊಡ್ಲ್ಯಾ. ಜ್ಞಾನಪೀಠ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ವಿಜೇತ್ ದಾಮೋದರ್ ಮಾವ್ಜೊನ್ ಹ್ಯಾ ಪುಸ್ತಕಾಕ್ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾವನ್ ಬರಯ್ಲಾಂ.
