Guwahati, November 14, 2024: Sixty-two rectors from seminaries under the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) gathered at the Don Bosco Institute in Guwahati from November 5 to 9 to address the evolving challenges of priestly formation. At the XXIII General Body Meeting of the Association of Rectors of Major Seminaries (ARMS), the clergy focused on “Missionary Formation in Major Seminaries,” emphasizing modern approaches to pastoral training amid social and cultural shifts. Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati led the opening Eucharistic celebration, underscoring the essential role of God’s calling in preparing seminarians for their mission.
The meeting highlighted a keynote address by Archbishop Emeritus Thomas Menamparampil, who urged a transformational shift in formation strategies. Advocating for personalized mentoring, He called for recognition of each seminarian’s unique potential, focusing on dialogue, cultural integration and engaging with marginalized communities. Dr. Vincent Darlong, former Vice Chancellor of Martin Luther Christian University, reinforced this by stressing the need to adapt training to societal changes, including exposure programs that foster seminarians’ engagement with underserved communities.
Rectors also explored the role of technology in reaching younger generations, with Father Paul Pudussery noting that technology should “enhance our connection with people, not isolate us.” Discussions extended to transparency and accountability within the Church, with ARMS Secretary Father Charles Leon advocating for increased lay participation in the formation process to incorporate diverse perspectives.
The gathering closed with a shared vision for inclusive outreach, with Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal of Calicut encouraging rectors to inspire seminarians to “cast wide nets in sharing the Gospel.” ARMS President Father Richard Britto announced a new module for missionary formation, signaling a Church-wide commitment to developing leaders prepared to serve in a pluralistic society. This pivotal assembly reflects the Church’s dedication to forming priests equipped to face modern challenges, embodying Christ’s message of compassion and outreach.
